Due to their unusual coloration and adorable looks, Parti poodles are becoming more popular every day. The original word "parti"
means
more than one and was a name originally given to any dog with more than one color. Over the years it has been changed to reflect a dog with a particular color pattern; A dog that is basically
white
with any color spots or patches. The most common being white with black, but other colors include white/silver, white/blue, white/chocolate, white/red, white/apricot and even white and cream although this color does not show the parti markings well and most people mistake them for a white poodle with cream ears. There is also the white/brindle and the tri marked which along with the parti markings have tan "dobie" type markings.

PARTI COLOR STANDARD: Coloring should be a nice clear white background with dark patches of any color. While any type of markings are acceptable including a solid colored head, the
preferred pattern
is dark patches over both eyes and on both ears. Muzzle should be white with a blaze up the forehead continuing into the topnot. Spots or patches may be anywhere on the body but should be broken up and not solid enough to form a saddle on the back. FAULTS: While a small amount of freckling (very tiny freckles in the white part of the coat) is acceptable (especially on the feet) excessive freckling is considered a major fault! A Full saddle on the back is acceptable but undesireable.
PIGMENT: Nose and eye rims should be a good deep black; except in chocolates which have a chocolate nose and eye rims.
FAULTS:
Pink nose or eye rims.
Many people have the mistaken idea that parti poodles are not eligable for AKC registration. This is not true! Parti Poodles are AKC registerable and AKC has even assigned them alternate color numbers shown in the chart below . But even though they are AKC registerable, they are not eligable to be shown in the conformation ring. They are accepted in the obedience ring and several have earned their CD and CDX titles! They are eligable to be shown in Europe though, and in Germany, they have their own breed status and are called "HARLEKINS". Unlike the American Poodle, Harlekins come in 4 sizes: toy-less than 11"; zwerg-11"-13"; klein-13"-16"; and gross-above 16"

PARTI COLOR HISTORY: Most people do not know that the first poodles were actually either solid black or black & white. There have been many famous paintings in the early and mid 1800's depicting Parti Poodles. (A few of them are shown below) Not only did Partis make up a large part of the actual first Sporting Poodles which were used for hunting as retrievers, but they also were the basic color of the smaller poodles working as "Truffle Dogs." These small light footed dogs had a keen sense of smell and were used for sniffing and digging up the edible fungus known as "truffles". Since truffles were considered a delicacy to many people, these little poodles were highly prized as they were able to dig up the truffles without breaking them. In appearance the "Truffle Poodles" were said to have been black & white in coloring, sometimes with black heads and tails with white bodies or mostly white with black patches. They were even shown in England under there own classification. It was not until the first Poodle standards were adopted that breeders decided to only go with the solid colored poodles for show. This standard is still in effect now, and as much as most show people hate to or won't admit to, parti colored poodles are way back in the family tree of almost all award winning  poodles of today !!!
